Drafting: Laser Engraved Keychain

Twin Valley High School

Purpose:
– Design and manufacture a functional key chain that efficiently and effectively utilizes the capabilities of the laser cutter/engraver.
– Utilize Adobe Illustrator to design a functional keychain that represents and identifies the end user of the keychain.

Criteria / Constraints:
– The key chain must have a unique shape representing the main design feature of the keychain.
– Three unique brainstorming sketches must completed and approved by the instructor prior to beginning the design on Coreldraw
– The keychain must fit within a 2” x 2” square
– Must include mirrored engraving
– Must identify the end user
– Must include and a 5/32” diameter (use the conversion chart in your notebook for the decimal equivalent) hole for the ring to pass through
– The 5/32” dia. hole must be located and minimum of 1/8” from the edge of the part.
– All graphics and text must be mirrored.

Thumbnail Sketching
– After designing your keychain you must gain approval from the instructor BEFORE sending the design to the laser printer
– Coreldraw file product should have similar characteristics as the thumbnail sketches

Red outline (vector) for cutting
Black portions (raster) for engraving

This tutorial describes how to use the Universal Laser VLS4.60 Laser System at Twin Valley High School. This video specifically describes how to engrave a 2″ keychain.
